How to choose your website platform for Retailers

There are many popular website building platforms to choose from. The right one for you will depend on your business needs and confidence with technology.

Review the chart below listing website builders from the easiest to use in green to more difficult. If you choose to use another platform make sure it has these top 3 features at minimum:

  1. Mobile friendly – your site should look as good on a smart phone as computer.
  2. CMS – content management system, which means a non-technical person can easily add, edit and manage a website.
  3. Add ecommerce options – such as a shop front and accepting payments etc.

Keywords are how people will search for you online. They include your most popular products, company name, your name (if you are a small retailer), your location and main brands. It is what people will type into Google (or another search engine) to find you. Use these in your website text and in your Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) fields built into your website’s content management system. SEO is the process of affecting the visibility of a website in a search engine.

Go ahead and pick your 10 keywords.

When you build your site it is easier to have your material gathered together first.

Your text and pictures can come from catalogues, brochures and or ads. Use the keywords you chose in Step 2 throughout the text you place on the website.

The easier-to-use website builders have 3-8 minute videos showing how to use all the tools in the builder and a step-by-step tutorial that will walk you through setting up your pages.

Watch the video and play with the builder tools. They are very easy to use and you can always undo/redo if you don’t like something.

At a minimum make 4 pages:

  • Home page: This is the first page people see. Put something of value for your customers on this page. Highlight who you are and why you can be trusted. You can put specials or a “call to action” on this page.
  • Products: What do you sell and why is your location the place to buy? This can start as one page and later you can add more. Use pictures, videos and text.
  • About: Who are you? What makes your store, staff and products different or better from your competitors? About is just like an introduction page about yourself and your business. The “About” page has been found to be the second-most-viewed page by website visitors.
  • Contact: Include your location, email, phone, and store hours. Use a contact form so people can contact you easily and a map for location (your builder has these ready to go).
  • Enter your SEO information: This is where you add in your keywords (search for “SEO” in the Help section of the builder you choose).

TIP:

If you have social media channels you should include them. The builders have a field to type your social media credentials (username and password) into. If you are selling online get a SSL certificate (Secure Socket Layer) – type SSL into Help search field on your builder and follow instructions – this will be an extra fee but keeps your sales data safe.

You want a domain or website name that reflects your retail name, company, and products. We recommend using godaddy.com to search for a name as they have a good suggestion tool.

However, you can buy your domain or website name through your website builder. The builder will walk you through buying it and making your site live. It may cost $5 more ($9-15) but it will save you the hassle of setting up / hosting your website.

IMPORTANT: Now that you have all of your information for your website add it to Google. http://www.google.com/business.

It will take 5-15 minutes and is very important in helping your new website show up in Google searches and to offering customers another way to find you.
