Social media offers a great opportunity for retail businesses, yet presents its own security variables. Challenges may include:

1. Sharing a local computer, and social media pages being updated and controlled by various staff using the same device.

2. Staff taking the opportunity to update their personal statuses either using their own device or the business’s devices, while using the Wi-Fi signals from within the organisation.

3. Balancing the benefits and risks of social media requires good company policy on how social media is used both at work and at home. Yes, you read that right. Many companies have policies that extend to staff using the company brand on their personal social media channels even when they are not working.

This quote from a recent Price Water House Cooper study on social media and business policy, highlights the benefits and risks:

“Social media can enrich employee performance and create a vibrant corporate community. The downsides? A business’s network and data could be compromised and its reputation and brand put in serious jeopardy.”

fbThe accounting company Ernst & Young recently made a social media guideline video (above) which, while high-level, demonstrates the importance of social media to the business while providing basic guidelines to its staff.
